If the recent single “By the Time” is a song about someone making the best of a bad situation, finding the silver lining in the wake of a failed relationship, “Open Up” is actually about making the most of an already more positive one.

George‘s music is all about optimism, and “Open Up” is about not only finding that goodness in yourself but also about not being afraid to broadcast it to the world. Although it doesn’t say so in as many words, the message is clear. We need more love in the world, and perhaps the easiest way to promote this is to stop hiding such feelings, be proud of having a good heart, celebrate your ability to be empathetic and understanding, and, while it might seem clichéd, be the change for the better that you want to see in the world. (NB: cliches are cliches for a reason…because they are true!)

“Open Up” feels more like a mantra than a song, something you should sing to yourself every morning —a chant to remind yourself of who you really are and who you genuinely want to be. (Chants would be a fine thing. Geddit?)

Once again, George has given us a great single, one that errs on the side of a sort of world music meets pop-folk anthem. Once again, he has given us something to think about; once again, he has taken the humble pop song and turned it into something not just meaningful but also vital, empowering, and important!
