Dance music isn’t all the stuff of the neon-lit clubland, of day-glo sounds and the glitz and glamour of the high life. In fact, it is better when it isn’t that simple or that conformist. It is better when it has something to say and when it has a dark streak running through it and a more menacing edge is in evidence. And, if you want to know what that might sound like, you can do a lot worse than listen to Moments of Sonder, the new one from She’s Excited.
If songs like Celebrity Parade neatly blend the euphoria of the dancefloor with more composed sentiments, groove with grace, melody with muscle, that is only the tip of the sonic iceberg. All I Need merges the dark digital dance sound with an urban rap vocal. Perforated comes across like a sound collage, a song ebbing and flowing through the edgelands of all manner of sounds and styles absorbing ideas as it goes. And Hello Brain is a Bowie-esque slice of groovesome alt-pop at its most alt!
Dance music can be many things. It is more an attitude than a sound, an approach rather than a genre. What She’s Excited! proves here is just the lengths to which it can be pushed and how flexible and accommodating its boundaries are when you push hard enough against them.
