Music, or more specifically, musical styles, can seem to have specific targets, especially generational ones. Pop appeals to a younger demographic, folk is often the realm of more seasoned and discerning listeners, while indie music perhaps falls somewhere in between. So, it’s cool to stumble across a band, or a duo in this case, that blends elements of all those genres to produce something that appeals not only to fans of each of those genres but also ticks boxes with all generations.

Welcome to “Mess We Leave Behind,” the new one from Generations. Harry Offutt and his daughter, Phoenix Hoppe, hence the band name, are a songwriting partnership that feels both timeless and forward-looking, fresh and familiar. “Mess We Leave Behind,” like all their music, sidesteps trends in favor of something more universal — songs that speak across age, taste, and background, music that is honest and authentic.

It’s a song built, initially, on delicate acoustic guitars and Hoppe’s exquisite voice. This is incremently cocooned with more intricate sonics – electric guitars add smooth, sophisticated textures, beats are gently introduced, the song shimmers and shines, space lets the light in and slowly it rises into a wonderful blend of the softly anthemic and the wonderfully articulate, the restrained and the reflective, the melodic and the meloncholic, the poised and the poetic.

Gorgeous stuff.
