Dwelling was the song that introduced me to Lilli Joon’s gorgeous sonic world. That spacious blend of singer-songwriter vibes, folk deliveries, and timeless vibes. And if that was my summation of her previous single, the latest, Tiny Portals, is all that and more.
I’m not saying that her music is in any way nostalgic or tipping its hat knowingly to the past, but if someone said that this was the work of a long-lost 60s Greenwich Village voice, a singer-songwriter who had once opened for the likes of Joni Mitchell or Joan Baez, I’m sure few would argue. But that’s the art of it: fresh music with a familiar feel, new artists standing on the shoulders of past giants. And that is precisely what is going on here.
