Yvngerror is the sound of British indie music having firmly put the echo of Brit-pop behind it. I know it was a long time ago, but I still get music landing on my desk that draws a direct line back to Oasis and Blur, though sadly not Pulp. Well, Spyglass is music made beyond that self-indulgent scene’s shadow. Finally.
Yvngerror feels like a breath of fresh sonic air. He still revels in the culture of the country and, indeed, the city he calls home, but there is nothing laddish or pretentious or scenester or self-congratulatory about it—a way forward at last. Nostalgia is never good, not if you want music to have a healthy future. Spyglass is the sound of that in action.
