Local Hero is one of those bands who, whilst not being punk themselves, are able to embrace and elaborate on everything punk was built on. Just listen to End of the World, a song built on walls of abrasive guitars, nostalgic rather than disenfranchised lyrics, and that same blend of muscle and melody, groove and grind that the punks pushed slightly too far toward the former and not enough to the latter.
But the other two songs on this short, sharp and shockingly good EP tell us most about the band. President Street and the Springsteen-esque title track hint at a more alt-country/alt-rock vibe, and you realise that if Tom Petty had broken through on NYC’s Lower East Side rather than in Florida and then California; this is what he might have sounded like.
