Aptly named song , that’s for sure. Bass-heavy, groove-driven driven and harking back to the best of the 90’s hip-hop cross-over bands. Remember that time before everything in the urban music world became formulaic and built on the same few off-the-shelf beats and samples? It was a time when bands such as A Tribe Called Quest, Soul 2 Soul, and even The Red Hot Chili Peppers blended all manner of sounds of their own making. The Frisky Gypsys do.
It was a time of funky basslines, groovy rock back-beats, soulful guitar licks, sing-along, hip-hop gang vocals and more than anything, a sense of fun, before the self-aggrandisement and gangster lifestyle (actual or fabricated) ruined everything. It is a time that is sorely missed.
And if you want to experience the turning back of time, you can either build a time machine, play that old Cher single or listen to a band like The Frisky Gypsys. I know which one I’d opt for.
