ANTONÍ makes folk music, but then again, not really. The fourteen tracks found on the new album, Holding Tight Lightly, might have a folk core, but this is more a case of “what folk music did next,” the sound of it moving with the times and staying relevant.
And so, for every expected folk move and traditional acoustic groove, you find an equal amount of delicate digital beats, electronic washes, dream state harmonies, and ambient rock creations. If it is folk, it is folk that has been heightened, deepened, expanded and taken to its current logical conclusion.
But the most interesting aspect of listening to ANTONÍ and this album is the thought that rises up in the back of your mind: Where will she take things next? I can’t wait to find out.
