Musically, it has plenty going on. It is a layered affair of sonic sheen, warm and welcoming pop textures, deft digital tones, and pulsing back beats. But it is a lot more than just a cool clubland song.
It is a song about awakening to who you are or at least exploring who you might be. Without overplaying the idea, Girls! reminds us to question everything about ourselves, allow ourselves to evolve, or at least leave ourselves open to the idea of change. Change is inevitable; repression is not the answer. Be yourself and don’t live by the expectations of others.
At least, that’s what it says to me.
