As a first taste of the mercurially named Aster Baby and the Wild Rabbits, I have to say I’m intrigued. No, I am more than intrigued…beguiled. Blue is a strange song, one that seems to run under its own steam, starting and stopping at will, ebbing and flowing between forward momentum and total collapse but doing so on purpose.
Most bands would pick up the melody, strap on a groove, and drive this song towards the finishing line. The fact that ABATWR doesn’t, or at least occasionally does so but only in fits and starts and when the mood takes them, is what makes them so appealing. In a world where the music seems to be all about giving them what they want, here’s a band that gives them what they didn’t realize they wanted, perhaps what they actually need, which is a much more satisfying result.
