I’m not sure where shoegaze starts and post-rock ends, or where dream-pop bleeds into the more electronic realms, or even where the digital sound of the night club finds its way into bigger experimental-rock orientated sounds, but I bet if you ever found your way to such a place, you would find the words _”Siren Section was here”_ scrawled on the nearest wall.
It isn’t so much that you don’t recognise the various sonic building blocks that the band use to create their mercurial and marvellous music, but the music that results from their deft alchemy is certainly refreshingly original. It’s not about the sonic ingredients, it is about their ability to bind them together in new ways. Spanning the analogue and digital worlds, blending the crushing power of rock and roll with the sophistication of clubland cool, infectious groove with anthemic grandeur, their latest single, “Medicine,” is an ever-evolving beast.
From skittering electronica and smooth sonic washes, the song slowly burns its way from an almost electro-pop starting point, albeit one that is already more ornate and sonically eloquent than any of the competition, to explode in searing guitars and intense six-string heat. And with these two points established, Siren Section is then free to blend electro-understatement with shoegaze excess, explore alternative rock structures and post-rock freedoms, and marry dance beats to squalling anthems.
It’s the sound of so many opposites attracting that it shouldn’t work, but boy, is this not only attractive, it is beguiling to the point of being compelling, energetic to the point of euphoria, and, hopefully, leading the listener to the point of sale!
