If songwriting starts with a blank canvas upon which artists paint their ideas through deft sonic brushstrokes or the bold use of musical colour, remixes are more like an engineering project, where it is more about building something fresh, yet somehow familiar, out of those original building blocks.
I have to admit that I wasn’t aware of the original song by Rejay, but I now know it to be a neat indie-pop song that runs on increasingly layered sounds, rhythmic guitars, and just enough beguiling sonics to keep the song flittering around the more dream-pop part of the musical map.
v:ølet‘s take on the song is inspired, pushing it deeper into the hazy electronics/dreamgaze vibe, swapping the structure and solidity of the analogue sounds for the charm and chime of a more beguiling digital one. She uses the original as a springboard into the songs more futuristic sonic potential.
Like all good remixes, the footprint of the original can still be heard, but now it is lighter, defter, more delicate, and less tethered to the conventional sounds of indie-pop, preferring to embrace drift and dream, adding surreal and subtle sonics, and embracing nuance rather than noise.
v:ølet clearly understands the art of remixing, that delicate balance of making the song your own while still acknowledging the qualities and aetshetic of the original. And that, in a nutshell, is what is happening here.
