When is a pop song more than just a pop song? When it is written by Byorn Gold. Over several albums, interrelated EPs, and standalone singles, he has shown that despite the infectiousness and accessibility of his music, which seems to run the length and breadth of the more mainstream musical landscape, his music has plenty of layers and hidden depths.

Love Called That Night is his latest single and while its message is straightforward, it resonates with regret and missed opportunity, as well as the questions and reflections of an alternative life path not taken.

What if destiny had a plan for you, and that plan never came to fruition? What if, when opportunity came knocking, you didn’t hear the call? What if, when love called you weren’t there to let it in to your life? These are the questions posed by this simple and seductive song.

Simple in its initial sound but seductive in the sophisticated way that Byorn Gold creates a soundscape behind the words that have the romantic sweep of the chamber orchestra yet are crisp and modern, sitting somewhere between the classical world and that of the contemporary chart sound.

And so, over the gentlest of balladry, the most understated of smooth and sophisticated popscapes, he remembers what might have been had he been brave enough to grab the opportunity with both hands, questioning himself: “How come I could not see—What was right in front of me?”

It’s a simple scenario and a personal one, too, but something that we can all relate to. Perhaps one of the oldest stories ever told, it’s a song that gets to the heart of the human condition—a song of life, love, loss, and longing.
