In My Corner – The Weebles  (reviewed by Dave Franklin)

a0770072000_16Charity singles have a bad reputation, images of some rich celebrity doing a bad knock-off of a song you already know and love for their “villa in the south of France” appeal or something equally vacuous. But sometimes such an effort comes from the right places and gets everything spot on.

What can be more heartfelt than a bunch of musicians getting to getter to make a record to raise money to help pay the medical costs of a long term friend, known affectionately as Macca,  suffering with Leukaemia. This isn’t an isolated effort, runs, golfing days, bike rides, cake sales have all helped but considering his friends include the great and good of the Cambridge music scene, it seemed only natural that they should get together and write a song to help the cause. And what a song it is too!

Far from the usual rehash of what has gone before, as is often to be expected in such ventures,  The Weebles have come up with a cracker of a song, an original, modern slice of vibrant Motown called In My Corner. Heartfelt and honest but also a groovesome and glorious piece of music in its own right. The song is a dedication to Macca’s friends and families who have always been there for him, ‘in his corner’ and have kept him going through many dark days and all profits from the single will go to help buy essential equipment such as an electric wheelchair, access ramps, a car hoist and other items which will help him lead an active and independent life.

Great music and a fabulous cause, what more could you ask for in a song?
