Well, that is refreshingly honest. We are so used to people feeling sorry for themselves in songs, waxing lyrical about how things aren’t their fault when relationships go wrong, as if they are doing so to be the first to control the (usually imagined) public narrative. It’s all too easy to play the victim, not to mention a great way to sell records but not a particularly original way of writing songs.
A much more original way is to be honest. And if that honesty sees you taking the blame or at least recognising that things were never going to work, then so be it. I suggest that such a sentiment is not only a more mature expression but is much more relatable to most listeners, too. At least those who have been around the block a few times, experienced love, loss, longing, and life, and know the traps and pitfalls involved.
And this all too uncommon honesty, TIM.M sets to a song built of a spacious cascade of keys, the most gentle of beats and a choir of heavenly harmonies. It is the perfect sonic frame for the vocals, and this is one of those times when the vocals, or at least their message, are definitely the focal point.
I must confess that, although I have experienced and loved TIM.M in his previous sonic guises, particularly as part of that musically fluid, revolving door, multi-media project Aliens, I’ve been late to the party regarding this latest solo adventure. But I have had a stern talk with myself and won’t let that happen again. (I bet you have heard me say that before.)
