My Life Story might ring a bell from the echoes of the indie heyday of the ’80s or perhaps from their steady presence in the hazy landscape of the ’90s Britpop scene. A band known for their versatile stage presence, capable of delivering punchy pop anthems or orchestrating grand, 11-piece musical spectacles, they’ve shared the spotlight with legendary acts such as Morrissey and The Wonderstuff, graced the opening slots for the likes of Blur, Carter USM, and Pulp, and even had the rare honour of headlining over the iconic Oasis. After their curtain call in 2001, the band sporadically reunited over the years, their musical flame refusing to be extinguished.
Today, their return is met with eager anticipation, as their latest three-track EP offers a tantalizing taste of their current musical musings. Leading the charge is the titular track “I’m A God,” a potent blend that nods to their indie and Britpop roots while skillfully navigating the contemporary musical landscape. Driven by infectious dance grooves, shimmering synth layers, and celestial guitar riffs, the song delivers a timely critique of our modern pantheon of idols and icons, drawing attention to the profound and profane forces that dominate our lives, often for the worse rather than, the better.
Following suit is “Numb Numb Numb,” an electrifying anthem that ignites the senses with its incendiary guitar-driven sound, leaving an indelible mark on the listener’s consciousness. Rounding out the trio, “Tits and Attitude,” with a title fit for the sardonic wit of a Jarvis Cocker creation, delivers a more calculated and introspective vibe. Weaving together understated grooves with dynamic guitar interjections, the track is a testament to the band’s ability to masterfully navigate the spectrum of sonic moods.
It’s a welcome return to the fray, and as they say, good things come to those who wait. And if twenty-odd years seems a long time to wait, it is fair to say that it is a time period commensurate with just how well received this short, sharp and shockingly good EP will be.
