I did say when reviewing her previous release, “Real Deal”, that this wouldn’t be the last time I check out Janita‘s sonic output; that earlier song did precisely what any good single must do: make you want to come back and know more about an artist. And so here I am.
This time out, we find Janita in a more considered mood, “I Want You I Warn You” being built of more delicate guitar work and intricate sonic threads than before. There are two sonic forces at work here. The verse creates mesmerising acoustic beauty through interlocking gossamer weaves of chords and notes, light enough for everything to pool and percolate perfectly yet with enough gravitas to make an impact. The chorus, in contrast, goes for the more rock and roll approach, creating a gently anthemic sound (if that isn’t an oxymoron) to make itself known.
It is the ebb and flow between these two sounds that create the dynamic of the song. And over that, Janita’s voice holds us spellbound, cool and seductive when it needs to be but also follows the music into that higher sonic ground in an impressive fashion.
As before, the same problem prevails: where does such a song, such an artist, fit into the sonic landscape? Where does this single sit in terms of genre, sound, and style? My answer is…who cares, as long as Janita keeps giving us such subtle and seductive, graceful and, let’s face it, truly great songs as this?
