Rob Massard has always done interesting things with roots music, his blends of folk and country always transcending the demarcations of their core genres, and he takes them above and beyond the place that most people working in such sonic realms are content to call home.

I Am The Sun is his latest, glorious affair. It is blended with slightly psychedelic, paisley-patterned pop poise. It is embued with a brilliant grace and grandeur that tips the whole thing over into angelic and anthemic, infectious, and ethereal realms.

Somewhere between the jilt and jaunt of the banjo and the sweeping orchestral strings, between the euphoric acoustica and the searing rock guitars, between the joyousness and sheer scope and scale of the song, Rob creates a new and intriguing sort of music, perhaps best described as progressive folk or psychedelic roots music.

But whatever you want to call it, the fact remains that it is a sound that is both unique to him and which also reminds us that even within the more established music genres of folk and rock, there are still plenty of new sonic experiments to be tried out and many adventurous paths to be traveled.

Hang on, Rob, let me get my coat and hat; I’m coming with you!
