It seems that in this day and age, we have forgotten what blue is all about. I mean really about. Too many superstars in Armani suits, too many privileged kids who have never had a tough day in life, too many people who haven’t had their hearts broken, all playing it by numbers.
If you agree with me, then you will be as happy as I was to stumble across Joe Boris and the gang and their latest slice of goovy blues, and a sound that is both super cool and red hot.
Taking the energy of electric blues and the sentiment of the older traditions, ‘Hoochie Coochie Coo’ is the sound of a very familiar strain of blues making its way in the modern age, instantly recognisable yet wonderfully fresh.
And, as the best bands often are, this is just a classic three-piece (okay, there seems to be a Hammond sound drifting in from somewhere, oh and more than one guitar track, but we’ll ignore that for the purposes of this paragraph), so everyone is on their game. Guitars groove and growl, drums are fun and unfussy, and melodic bass lines bridge the two. In a trio there is nowhere to hide; everyone has to bring the sonic goods. Three is indeed the magic number.
Okay, it’s blues in the classic sense; it knows the sound it is going for, and it delivers it in a way that kicks arse for the discerning music listener and ticks all the boxes for the blues purist. With all due respect, I’d say it ain’t going to change the world, but it sure as hell is gonna make your day and what more do you need than that.
Mission accomplished.
