Honung – sebastiancool (reviewed by Dave Franklin)

There is a sweet blend of sixties-pastel pop and cutting-edge Euro-house at work in the jaunty vibes that make up Honung, a time-travelling, genre-hopping sense of sonic self that is beguiling. If it is to modern technologies that sebastiancool looks to find the tools to create the music, it is to a much earlier era that he casts his ear for the overall vibe.

Because of this, there is something both cutting edge and slightly nostalgic at work here, as if the music is forward-thinking yet haunted by an echo of the past. It’s a vibe that makes the track cool and quirky, infectious and slightly unexpected.

Also unexpected are the subtle and subtle changes of tempo, moments when the music slows as if coming to an end before picking up the beat again and heading back into the groove.

It is hard to do new things in dance music, not because everything has already been done but because it is a rigid genre. But sebastiancool has found plenty of new sounds and styles to work into Honung. A neat song and a breath of fresh sonic air!
