There is a wonderful contrast at the heart of Good Day, the latest track from Griffin. On the one hand, the vocals come on like a sonic freight train, salvos of rap-sung lyrics tumbling one after the other, relentless but infectiously so. On the other, the music which propels it is gentle and drifting, almost ambient, a raft of sweet sounds with only the skittering beats to act as the energy that helps drive things along. A song where two contrasting styles seem to combine to create a sound that is neither understated nor forceful but sometimes both simultaneously. If such a thing is even possible!

And the true nature of this contrast is seen when the vocals fade out leaving a space in the top line and all that rises up to replace the deft and dexterous rush of words is a cinematic haze or a gentle electronic wash. Two opposites but attractive nonetheless. It’s a fine line to walk and a neat trick to be able to build a song out of such opposing vibes. But walk it Griffin does. And the trick is convincing and smartly delivered.

I guess it is the fact that the two sides of this sonic coin balance each other out perfectly. The gossamer electronic creations that act as the platform allow the vocals and the beat to dominate, merely oozing through the gaps and softening the edges, happy to wait for their moment in the limelight. The space that is left below the excitable and energized lyrics means that the song doesn’t become too complex, too heavy, too full of cliche.

It’s a sort of urban pop, I suppose, taking the infectious punch of the more boisterous and cutting edge, rap influenced styles, though this is much cleverer than just calling it a rap song, and allowing it to waltz above clouds of dreamy electronica. And on top of that, it’s damn optimistic, a hymn to getting the most out of life, of feeling positive, of grabbing this one short existence by the horns and taking charge. And who doesn’t need that sort of positivity in their life right now?
