Sitting somewhere between rock muscle, country cool and pop accessibility, For Better is the sort of crossover song that takes artists out of the circles they thought would make it in and introduces them to a broader audience. It worked for the likes of Taylor Swift, a popular country girl who wound up becoming the world’s biggest pop star, so why not Sydney Hanson? Why not, indeed?
And For Better is the perfect song to use as a springboard to that end. Rock fans will love the low-slung groove, blues aficionados the authenticity and country kids will dig the rootsy traditions it is built on. But if such a crossover is on the cards, it is the pop-pickers and chart watchers that you need to impress but fear not, I doubt if there is a mainstream music buyer alive that won’t love its blend of accessibility and integrity, its smart wordplay and sing-along-ability, its outsider feeling and the clever way that it blurs the lines between cult favourite and commercial hit.
Watch your back Taylor and co, there is a new kid on the country-rock-pop block!
