While the video alludes to physical home improvements and DIY-type actions, the “Fixing Up Everything” of the title is a metaphor for the self-improvements and hard reboots we all face as we move through life.
Given the big upheavals that such actions often set in motion, the consequences and changes that ripple through our lives, it is a surprisingly gentle and almost dreamlike song, meditative and mellifluous. Guitars are sparsely picked, beats are just enough to give the song shape, basslines are deft and understated, and just a smattering of other sonic elements drift behind the vocals.
As these momentous ideas are vocalized in the most hazy and hushed of ways, the song floats by, delicate rather than driven, graceful rather than relying on an obvious groove, beautiful and gossamer-like.
Lyrically, the song suggests that it is a personal account of something the author has been through, but even if the words don’t apply directly to the listener, the mood and intent of the song are very relatable. Have we not all, at some time in our lives, felt the need to walk away and start again, broken everything on purpose so that we can rebuild anew, or turned down a different path to embrace a necessary change?
No, well, when it happens to you, and it probably will, you have the perfect soundtrack for those moments.
