Cinematic! That’s the word for the sound of “Crack in my Window.” Not for Allyson Whitmell, the mundane pop world of cliched grooves, or the predictable moves of the indie realm; instead, this is music that comes from a far more sophisticated, not to mention seductive, place, a place where the ambient end of the classical world and scintillating jazz understatement merge, where filmic sound scores and angelic vocals dance delicately together.

It is the perfect soundtrack to this time of year when the world is starting to shrug off the winter blues and we allow the first signs of spring into our homes and lives. With the rejuvenation of the world, our mind turns to our own movement in the world when we get itchy feet and ready ourselves for new adventures, writing new chapters in our own stories.

A gorgeous blend of gentle piano and sweeping strings, it is a sound that seems to float past rather than impose itself upon us, as much an atmosphere as a song in the more usual sense. And as if to underline that fact, we are treated to an instrumental version of the song, too, which is equally as evocative and just as beautiful, reminding us that music, when done this deftly, speaks for itself without the need for lyrics to guide us.

Both versions are achingly beautiful, both are exquisite in the extreme.
