I’m not saying that Messy Eater is my best alt-pop find of recent times…actually, I am saying that…no question. I know that might seem like hyperbole, the curse of the modern age, but surely it would only be hype if the music didn’t back up such a statement. I can guarantee that within a minute of opening salvo “Happy Place” getting its hooks into you, your internal monologue will be nodding along and conceding that I have a point.

Genre-hopping and big hooks, infectious groove and slick production are the name of the game, from “Learning To Love What I See in The Mirror” and its blend of sassy dance moves, soul-pop grooves and smart samples, to “Vibe Killer’s” trumpet-driven boogie. From “Anything For A Quiet Life’s” chill-mantra to “Bad Day(Lemonade)’s eternal optimism, this is pop music to blow away the shadows of life in the modern world. In fact, so positive is the vibe with Messy Eater, perhaps he has invented “Poptimism!” Let’s see if that catches on.

It’s great to come across someone making music that isn’t all doom and gloom, and even when having bad days, Pete Bott, the Messy Eater himself, is all about turning the frown upside down.

Messy Eater already sounds like timeless pop, in the same way that the likes Beck‘s music never ages or how Gorillaz seem to be able to constantly appeal to the next wave of pop-pickers. I would also add that with Gorillaz’ star once more in ascendance, Messy Eater is in the perfect position to ride a whole new pop wave. Comfort Food for thought, perhaps!
