Underhill West might, as some more mean-spirited journalists have suggested, sound like a firm of solicitors from Tonbridge Wells, but they are actually one of the funkiest bunch of pop groovers doing the rounds today. And not just today, the aptly named “Celebrate” is their sonic birthday card to themselves having been in the game for two decades.
Running on the sort of bassline Prince would have loved to have had in his back catalog and the kind of pop chops that echo icons such as Michael Jackson, “Celebrate” does just that. While the band has written it specifically to mark their own career milestone, the open and accessible nature of the track means that it is going to find the song of choice from any party you could care to mention. Birthday, graduation, anniversary, promotion, or even just the start of summer, this track seems set to find ubiquity amongst…well, everyone. And even then, who needs an excuse to play it beyond the fact that it can only make your day better?
I’m not saying that the song is timeless…after all, what is?…but you can hear musical history running through it, everything from 70’s disco vibes to 80’s dancefloor anthems, and then right through the soundscape that the likes of The Weeknd and Daft Punk made their own in this century.
Even if you have nothing to celebrate, play it anyway. Celebrating “Celebrate” is justification for the celebration itself!
