The shimmering rock tones and polished textures of the title track prove to be the perfect way to lead us into this six-track album, the latest from Connor Cherland. It deftly lays out his sonic stall, one that displays wares ranging from Americana and folk to rock and indie, even skirting the edges of pastures pop.
And then, across six songs, he fits those genres together in inventive and adventurous ways. If the opener and the appropriately named Heavy err on the side of an accessible rock, Good For Something and Robin are delicate ballads, I Don’t Need CA is a rock song wrapped inside a pop Trojan Horse, and You Are What You Take In straddles the line between accessibility and underground. A line that the likes of Tom Petty walked so deftly.
It’s not only a great album but a varied one. But the neat thing is that no matter which genres he is pursuing, which sounds and styles he fuses and forges together, the songs never once sound anything other than a cohesive collection. A neat trick if you can do it. And Connor Cherland can.
