Groovy baby! There is always something in Ranzel X Kendrick‘s music that echoes the past. Not necessarily in a big or obvious way, certainly not enough to level accusations of nostalgia or retrospective repetitions, but just enough to prove that he knows his music history.
With his latest single, “Backpacking,” he wraps that slight taste of the past in some country lilts and folk-pop grooves, cool duel harmonies, and a bouncing and buoyant, infectious energy.
It’s a call to arms to all those who want to turn their back to the busy world, head into the sunset, and lose themselves in nature, if only for a short time. There is such a thing as forest bathing, which all sounds a bit, well, middle-class hippy territory to me, but “Backpacking “advocates something much more obvious and easily available…perhaps we could call it “trail showering” or “hike cleansing.” Whatever you label it, it’s certainly a more practical and less embarrassing way of re-energizing the mind, body, and soul.
Like I said, groovy tune, great idea. I’m all for it!
