There is a path through the musical landscape that seems to swerve any obvious genre tag or pigeonhole, and it is generally one that is accessed not by avoiding established and familiar sounds but by embracing them and finding new ways of combining their various charms and signature moves. Listen to “Average Man” and tell me that this isn’t the road that Casii Stephan isn’t on.
It is this path that occasionally sees an artist find their way to the rarified pastures that get their music labelled as classic! I’m not saying that Casii Stephan is there yet, but the only thing missing is the passage of time to let things cool and percolate, marinate and mingle in the mind of the collective discerning music fan.
After all, it has it all. Stacatto rock riffs…the only kind that really counts. Bluesy and bold vocals. Stomping, rock ‘n’ soul grooves. Pop accessibility, in the broadest and best sense of the meaning. Deep lyrics. Muscle married to melodicism, Pace running with poise. Power tempered by poignancy.
The result is a song that already feels as if you have been listening to it for half your life, and oddly enough, that is true no matter how old you are, which I guess is an indication of its timeless qualities.
Genres, huh? All they do is tether a song to the fickle passing winds of fad and fashion, so who needs them? Not Casii Stephan; she has her sights set on a much bigger picture.
