Eric Ezra may have started off in a more conventional indie-rock place, but his latest album, Amphibian, shows he is more than happy to evolve and move with the times. Still a maker of instrumental music, he has embraced heavier rock weight and more beguiling electronic sonics to develop his sound into a darker, perhaps more intriguing place.
So, we are presented with ten tracks that wander these brooding and often claustrophobic musical paths. That said, there is plenty of variation in these eclectic musical salvos.
If the titular opener leans heavily into somewhat gothic doom and stygian shade, then Mad, which follows, shows us that he is not afraid to inject the songs with some unexpected funk via the bass lines.
By the time we get to Captured, that funk has turned to a more incendiary, almost industrial sound and continues to evolve through the drifting electronica and searing sonics of Death and the dirge-disco-dance of Combat.
If you think rock guitar-based instrumentals don’t have many places that they can go to remain adventurous and satisfying, then you need a bit of Eric Ezra and his electro-rock interface in your life.
