Kenny Foster‘s songs have always carried a gentleness within them. Even when he has headed out into a more rock-and-roll realm, as he did with songs like ‘Sideways Apocalypse,’ those bolder moves were tempered by something softer and more seductive.
‘All Right Then’ lets those calmer, more considered moments take over, and the result is a dream-like sonic odyssey that takes in Beach Boys-esque harmonies, late-Beatles playfulness, West Coast soul-pop seductions, jazz intricacies, and orchestral sweeps.
Add a video that mixes childlike cartoons and nostalgic memories, and you have a song that gently pulls the listener into its sweet, even lysergic, embrace. And the message…well, the lyrics are a little opaque, but the song seems rooted in compassion, possibly for someone struggling, lost, or starting again…perhaps all three. Specifics aren’t important; feeling is everything.
But that is the great thing about music in general: even when the theme is slightly hidden or uniquely personal – or perhaps especially when it is- we can find our own meaning in its lyrical depth, even finding something relatable that the artist may not have even intended.
Even the gentlest of songs can speak volumes…this is definitely one of those times.
