I have to admit that I’m not the world’s biggest dance fan. But I love what SIR-VERE does. Why? Because they make dance music for those outside the dance scene. They make the sort of dance music that is robust enough to appeal to the post-punkers and perhaps even the rockers. It is music that combines the groove of the dancefloor and the grit of the industrial music world.
It is dance music that appeals to those way beyond the neon lights and high fashion of the uptown club and fits perfectly into those alternative nightclubs that play music from across the underground spectrum. And their new one, “Adore,” sounds like it would fit perfectly in between a classic New Order track and some long-forgotten early New Romantic cult cut.
And I guess the reason for that is that they seem to make dance music out of some pretty gritty sounds. The beats are brutal, the riffs are repetitive and harsh, the groove is infectious to the point of being relentless, and the additional sonics seem to be aggressively confrontational, as they are bullying you into hitting the dancefloor whether you like it or not.
Dance music for rock fans? Weaponized grooves? The sound of dance music breaking out of clubland and settling a few scores? It’s all that and more.
