The wonderfully named Izzy the Gent has been making post-punk music from a secret lair in the Bay Area for quite a time now. Everything but The Everything (an equally excellent name for a band) is his latest musical vehicle.

A solo project that has turned into a live musical vehicle, he quickly surrounded himself with the great and good of local musicians, namely, vocalist Sophia Prise, guitarist Ian Dowd, drummer Chad Roxxit with and Izzy himself, a veteran of bands such as Jon Benet Stranglehold, The Frail, The Cons and Fake Your Own Death looking after bass duties and everything else too.

As the title suggests, this second volume of two-track releases harks back to the golden age of 7″ vinyl. The band delivers two great sonic salvos that feel like the perfect bridge between the ’80s post-punk heyday and a more modern take on such a sound.

Hotshots is a neat slice of shimmering indie, a call back to when jangling guitars and an awareness of pop infectiousness ran through a truly alternative scene and sound. Salt, which would have been known as a B-side back in the day, is a more urgent affair, an adrenaline rush of snarling alternative rock and indie sensibilities.

Both are the sound of the past being reappropriated, reimagined, rebuilt and repackaged for a modern audience, and it is glorious to behold. I’m reliving my formative years all over again, which is a great feeling, especially at my age!
