One of the more exciting aspects of reviewing music is when you come across a language barrier. I regard such situations not as a problem but as an opportunity. It begs the question that, if you take the lyrical component, the direct, language-driven communication, out of the equation is what remains still compelling, accessible and infectious. Too many artists rely on direct contact with the listener, but what are you left with when it is gone?

Well, in the case of Муза, you are left with a powerful sonic punch. Apparently, the song is a social-philosophical message; sadly, my Bulgarian is…well, zero…so I will have to take their word on that, but in keeping with the dexterous wordplay and deft lyrical salvos that hip-hop and, later on, rap made its name on, you can here that there are plenty intelligent deliveries and poignant poeticism being laid out.

But even without understanding the words, the song feels like a neat slice of nineties hip-hop, perhaps the genre’s golden age. The beats drive things along with confidence; the groove is strong, and between the words and the beats, all manner of beguiling electronica coils and spirals.

Music can speak for itself and do so by bypassing the part of the brain that deals with language and instead talking to the heart rather than the head; it can trigger feeling and emotion and, of course, stir the soul, not to mention such a track can get even the most static wallflower on the dance floor.

Any track that can do all of that is something a bit special. Муза is just such a track.
