I spend most of my day listening to bands trying to make a big impact, trying to redefine pop music or find a new place for rock music to go, or merely rehashing the same old indie sounds only louder and with less finesse so that I have to put pen to paper feeling like a sonic blunt trauma attack victim.

This is why ParaDyce! and their latest track, “Pacific Coast,” came as a welcome relief. Mellifluous, that’s the word. It’s a word I use a lot, but here, no other word will do; you can write the word in bold, block capitals, and underline it in red…three times.

Steve Palmer and David L. Griffin are purveyors of nu-jazz who revel in making music from floor-filling grooves to serene soundscaping. “Pacific Coast” is undoubtedly at the latter end of that spectrum and is a gloriously understated mix of minimal beats, deft piano lines, and synth washes. Sublime…that’s another perfect word.

When you want to lay back, escape the day, and imagine yourself driving along the Californian coast road or lying on a beach at Mazatlan, this song will take you there. If not, your money back!
