Walking deftly between the rich soundscape of those post-punk synth pioneers and the cutting edge of alternative pop, this third single, taken from Hot Hail!‘s upcoming second album, Hope In Hell, is a sonically lush affair. And despite its chilled vibe and seemingly restrained nature, there is a surprising amount to unpack here.
Musically, the song reflects the bright lights of the dancefloor as it winds down in the early hours, whilst also drawing on the shadows of a darkwave past. I say darkwave rather than gothic, as this is a reminder of those early, post-punk days when the early electronic scene was broad enough to include those experimentalists who catered to the creatures of the night as well as the Blitz Kids who would take that same sound overground with the New Romantic sound.
But that was then, and this is now. And now it’s about ‘Needle’ and its neat blend of melancholy and reflection, of cinematic soundscaping and seductive groove, of harmony and heartache. And as much as you might hear the echo of the likes of Depeche Mode as they transitioned from pop pioneers to dark global icons, it is clear that while Billy Sigil, the person behind the Hot Hail! name is happy to tip their hat (probably a natty fedora worn at a jaunty angle) to what has gone before; they have their eyes firmly fixed on the future.
