If we are to learn anything from Bird Cage Theatre, and for those with a keen ear, there is much to be learned, then it is this. Anthemics, the art of music writ large and powerful, is less about volume and more about layering and careful sonic positioning.

Take Fire Went Down. It is big, eventually, anyway, but not because there is one sucker-punch sound but because of a steady build-up of additional tones and layered textures, smart nuances, and clever use of space. And that last element is much more important than most people think. But Bird Cage Theatre understands that such space creates the room for big things to not only happen but to be heard to happen—clever, guys, very clever.
