Sometimes a song is more than a song. It can be a dialogue, the promotion of an idea, a point of contact for the like-minded, or something to make you think or feel. In that spirit, “Government Grade” is a rallying point, a line in the sand, a flag planted on a hill.
Yes, Solid Gold gives us some great music, a blend of sweeping strings running through a country-infused indie sound, a song that would give me much to talk about in other circumstances, but here, the idea behind the song is the focal point. And as the lyrics wax poignantly about the state of the US today, highlighting its failures and injustices, the unethical and illegal actions of its current government, it mixes such information and support with altruism.
All profits from the song go to a different Minnesota Mutual Aid group each month. That is what is known as putting your money where your mouth is; that is what it means to be part of a community.
