Like any good artist, Jehry Robinson makes music that represents the times he lives in, not just music that sums up this moment, but also the sound of everything moving forward. Not one to rely on the tried and tested sounds of the past, whilst you can identify the individual musical building blocks that he works with, it is the overall sonic architecture he ends up with that is the real charm here.
“Good By Now,” his latest single, neatly captures everything I have tried to express above in sound. There is a brilliant balance at work here, one that neatly meshes together cool urban vibes and indie traditions, cutting-edge digital grooves, and infectious acoustic pop moves.
It is this deft blending of sounds and styles that makes music like this so important. Let others stick to the old templates—the cliched rocker, the over-earnest indie kids, the gangster rapper, the lowest common denominator popster—this is the sound of mainstream music moving on.
More than that, it is one of those songs that feels as if, now that summer is kicking in, it will be everywhere – the soundtrack to every road trip and beach barbeque, the music you get ready to before a Friday night out or find yourself dancing too at 1 am at the coolest club in town.
Trust me, I’m a music journalist; I know a hit when I hear one!
