Pop music might have cornered the market for infectiousness, rock for energy, but the blues has always been the place where emotion reigns supreme. Particularly those emotions that swirl around heartache and longing, failed relationships, and regret.

“It’s Called Love…It’s Called The Blues” encapsulates a variety of elements and aspects in its direct and deft sound. It is almost a TED talk, or a barroom elder passing on all they have learned about love and how relationships often chew you up and spit you out, even when the object of your affection doesn’t mean to. It is also a brilliant slice of warm, spacious, and textured blues that echoes the spirit of the genre’s roots. The feeling is timeless; it’s just the way we capture it in the studio that really changes. The song is also a wonderful blend of deft finger-picked acoustic and heavy, raw electric twangs, minimal beats but endless groove. – part Delta-belter, part emotive rocker. Blues for the modern age indeed!

This track sees Wattmore collaborating with Australian songwriting legend Allan Caswell, and the resulting song is everything the blues needs today to move with the times: the perfect blend of various styles and eras, without losing its truest essence.

Lyrically too, the words are both rich in worldly wisdom and full of humour, again something that blues was always great at – smiling at grief, laughing in the face of disaster. Given the current state of the world, those are probably skills we need to embrace.

It’s Called Love…It’s Called The Blues… it’s called a fantastic song!
