This latest album from Vincent Corvello may appear to be just a collection of scintillating and seductive jazz grooves and accessible and graceful original moves, and, of course, it is that, but it is also so much more. Having lost his father, mother, and brother all within eight months at the start of the pandemic, Vincent wrote the song, Torchlight, a tribute to his parents and grandparents who endured so much, emigrating to a new country so their descendants would have a better life. This earnest and emotive piano anthem is the cornerstone of the album.

From these mixed feelings of loss and gratitude, hardship and optimism, the heart of the album began to take shape, and so Torchlights was born. It is obviously personal to Vincent and his family but look close enough and in these songs we see all our own family stories reflected.

The songs are spacious piano tunes filled with heart and healing, pathos and poignancy, and, for the most part, they are left wonderfully spacious. Occasional orchestral sweeps bring additional grace and grandeur, but this is definitely one of those times when less is more, and that understatement and restraint frames Vincent’s emotive vocal pleas, stories, feelings, and thoughts perfectly.
