Roots may have been my first taste of the wonderfully named 20 Year Short Break, but I knew it wouldn’t be my last. To prove it, here I am listening to the delights of their new one, Underneath, and what a neat slice of rock and roll it is.
A staccato groover that uses the on/off dynamic to create riffs that strut and stagger and sashay and swagger, a song that blends lulling breakdowns with sky-searing crescendos, a song with is both honest rock and roll as god intended and a thing of raw, incendiary, anthemic beauty.
