Well, that will teach me to judge books by covers, or in this case, bands by their names. The Spooky Boys conjures up all manner of dark and perhaps slightly gothic sounds, but that is not what they are about. Now, I’m partial to a bit of music made on the dark side, but I’m even more a fan of lo-fi, honest, indie-infused jangle-pop, which better describes what they are all about.

Past Tense is great; guitars scrape and jangle, shimmer and chime as the mood takes them, the beats are buoyant, the bass lines pulse with additional melody, and the vocals have that anthemic quality. However, this is DIY-sounding music, so the anthemic qualities are more the sound of the bathroom’s unexpectedly great acoustics rather than that of the Royal Albert Hall. Which, for me at least, wins every time.
