“Chained” is a song built on a dilemma, and it is one that most of us can relate to in some way. The song’s narrator is in a relationship that isn’t healthy for him, one where he isn’t free to be himself. But it is a relationship with someone who he loves. He feels chained to that person through obligation and responsibility as much as love itself. He knows he must leave, but he knows he can’t.
The lyrics are, therefore, reflective and thoughtful, running through this dilemma over and over and coming to the same conclusion every time. It is no one’s fault, but it can’t continue.
These thoughtful and thought-provoking lyrics run over the top of a great tune, assembled out of folk finesse and pop accessibility, singer-songwriter deftness, and acoustic-rock energy.
It might seem as if everyone is picking up acoustic guitars at the moment under the deluded impression that such action allows you to call yourself a singer-songwriter, but the real deal these days is in very short supply. Alwyn Morrison, however, is the real deal.
