Might Need A Gun – Soda Cracker Jesus (reviewed by Dave Franklin)

I pretty much said the same before, when the fantastic My Anthem was under the pen, that finding your way to that place which simultaneously ticks boxes for both rock fans and pop lovers pays dividends for the music maker. It is at this point on the sonic map that the weight of the former dances most deftly with the infectiousness of the latter, and with the right amount of fancy sonic footwork, you get the best of both worlds. On this latest release, Soda Cracker Jesus masters the sonic steps to that dance and does so to perfection.

But this is more than just a meeting of those two sonic forces. There are brooding bass lines, staccato riffs, space and atmosphere, slow builds and sonic payoffs, bubbling synths and abrasive guitars, slightly psychedelic vibes, and so much more. And if that sounds like a lot of conflicting musical sounds and styles to be hanging about in the same three-minute forty-second space all I will say is yes, it might be in the hands of a lesser songwriter.

But, what is so clever about Might Need a Gun is the way that the various elements ebb and flow flowing the space for all of them to shine and function before finally all joining together into one clever and calculated chorus of creativity.

Art and addiction are working in unison; that’s what Soda Cracker Jesus is all about here, and rarely has it been done better.
