ZOE from Earth – The Sun (reviewed by Dave Franklin)

I write about music all the time, daily, for hours at a stretch, so I listen to lots of songs and sample lots of different artists. And I mean LOTS. Because of this, I’m pretty good at putting music in rough compartments and labelling things by a general sound, style or genre. But occasionally, an artist passes under my pen that is impossible to label, tag or otherwise easily describe. I love those moments, and The Sun, the latest EP from ZOE from Earth, is just such a moment.

Across five songs, she does nothing less than build new sonic worlds out of drifting atmospherics and spacious electronica, deft beats and delicate sonics. And once built, she populates them with a vocal offering optimism and hope brought via angelic and ethereal sonic qualities.

Few have ventured into this creative realm, and the best of those who have, the likes of Bat For Lashes and Kate Bush, have returned with music that is truly game-changing, unique, and blessed with longevity. Add ZOE From Earth to that short and rarified list of artists.

The Sun is an EP seven years in the making, but as they say, good things come to those who wait. And this record is a good thing indeed, actually, make that a great thing.
