As a second of three musical tasters for their forthcoming album, Happy Days, Used To Be Fun does everything that an advanced single should, that is, intrigue, entice and capture the listener’s imagination. Seasonal Falls are great at making soulful and seductive music, spacious and erring on the understated, and this is undoubtedly all of those things and more.
There has always been a wonderful groundedness to their music, too. Whether they are advising us to keep our ambitions manageable with songs like Reach For Nearby or capture the spirit of simple serenity with Happy Dayz, the music is always at the opposite end of the spectrum from most bold and bombastic music being made in the modern age.
Used To Be Fun is no different. Here, they take a slightly self-deprecating look inside and muse on someone turning from a well-liked part of the social group into someone less popular but arguably happier with who they are. It’s a conundrum, and it’s also a fantastic, fun and thoughtful song.
