Old Brown Boots – Craig Gould (reviewed by Dave Franklin)

To some, the idea of such a thing as British-Americana may seem like a bit of an oxymoron, or at least something that is neither one thing nor the other. But I would suggest that it all depends on how you look at these things. Where some see sonic forces out of harmony, I see opposites that attract. And “Old Brown Boots,” the new single from Craig Gould, is a very attractive proposition indeed.

It also explains how those two quintessential musical forces can combine to create music that is greater than the sum of its parts.

For every New World country twang found here, there is an equal touch of Old World folk finesse. For each drifting steel pedal line, there is a taste of the English roots revival. so not only is this a blending of genres, it is a merging of geographies too. And lyrically, Gould is deft enough to play with imagery relatable to roots aficionados the world over.

With a string of standout festival performances to his name, the announcement of his fifth headline UK tour, and a support slot to none other than Robert Vincent, a billing that speaks volumes about how he is considered and perhaps the trajectory that he is on, the future is looking very bright for Craig Gould.
