Nothing Has Changed – Gaby Rhythm (reviewed by Dave Franklin)

Gaby Rhythm titled the album from which this latest single is taken, Different, for a very good reason: to describe the varied and adventurous blend of sounds and styles. And Nothing Has Changed is a song that reflects that eclectic and outsider spirit in just the space of the four minutes it takes to lay out its narrative.

Gothic country? Apocalyptic blues? Warped Spaghetti Western? Take your pick, it’s all in there or just make your own genre label up, its fun. But whatever you call this strange and beguiling slice of blasted and brooding roots music, it is hard to deny that we haven’t wandered into the sort of territory that the likes of Nick Cave or PJ Harvey would find familiar, especially if they had lent into the sound of old-time, frontier music. Although, to be fair, this sounds more like the sound track to a film based on a Stephen King novel than anything that you might have found in the old west.

After revelling in and revealing a date with destiny, a showdown, and a chance for those quick to judgment to jump to all the wrong conclusions, the song reminds us that, despite the long passage of time, nothing has changed. Nothing ever does. Do we ever learn from our past? It seems not.
