Not Yours to Lose – Bullets and Butterflies (reviewed by Dave Franklin)

Rock and roll music has changed so much since Bill and the boys rocked around the formative clock, and in doing so changed music, and indeed the world forever. But some things never change, such as the elements that make the genre so enduring, so recognizable, so loved. At its best, it is big and bombastic, in your face and from the wrong side of the tracks, it throws out riffs like a badass, drives like a demon, is energized to the point of being euphoric, is down and dirty and rocks you like a hurricane! All things that this latest one from Bullets and Butterflies embraces.

That’s not to say you have heard it all before; nothing could be further from the truth. I’m sure Mr. Haley would hardly recognize this, but that is the point: rock music finds a new form with the flow of fad and fashion, taste and technology, and “Not Yours To Lose” is a perfect example of where the genre is at right now.

But, forget the history lesson, let’s dig in. “Not Yours To Lose” is built on big riffs and staccato rhythms, brilliant call-and-response vocals, pummelling beats, pulsing bass lines, and, if that wasn’t enough, low-slung guitars and leather trousers! What more do you need from a slice of contemporary rock?

I don’t know what Bill would have made of it, but I can’t get enough!
